Should I Pay a Premium For Diamond Clarity?

Consider the average diamond engagement ring buyer making a substantial often once off purchase. The classic 4 C's (cut, color, clarity and carat) have a significant impact on the pricing of a diamond. Then considering that the average type engagement diamond (of 0,9 ct round G color VS2 clarity) is often in excess of $4,000, it becomes important to understand what one is paying for.

If one can see an inclusion or impurity with the naked eye (I clarity grade and sometimes SI2) it is not appealing to the naked eye may affect the way the light travels or is reflected. However, above these grades, are several scales of clarity, and for each scale a 5% to 15% price jump is asked of the buyer. One needs to really ask the question - why would the average engagement ring buyer, without the obvious benefit to the diamond seller aside, pay a big premium for something that the wearer in truth cannot see. I believe the 'resale value' argument is not that valid (a second hand diamond engagement ring is hugely discounted anyway) and the argument that it affects the way the light travels, for inclusions beyond the naked eye, this does just not ring true to me.

For the best value, consider trading down clarity and taking that extra value in a bigger carat size or preferably a better color. A higher color quality is clearly more exciting to the trained and untrained naked eye. So when one purchases or designs a diamond engagement ring, consider understanding the cost of what you specify based on your knowledge, then find another stone with lower clarity yet 'eye clean' and see the big jump in value. Often a big win to the average diamond engagement ring buyer. So when shopping at a real world jeweler, test him on this and if shopping online, ensure the site has tools to allow the clarity trade-off for value to be automated and not just a shopping cart of available stock they are trying to sell you. The diamond industry loves you to overpay for an aspect that provides little or no value to you - do not overpay for diamond clarity grading.
